Chassis Mount Canopy / Service Body: A Lighter Ute Setup for Work
For tradies and fleet vehicles that don’t need to remove the canopy, a chassis mount canopy, also known as a service body, can offer a much more weight-efficient setup than running a separate ute tray and canopy.
If the canopy is staying on the ute permanently, why carry the extra weight of a tray underneath it?
Instead of mounting a canopy on top of a complete aluminium tray, the service body is mounted directly to the vehicle chassis. By removing the tray structure underneath the canopy, you can reduce unnecessary weight while still keeping the enclosed storage and access required for everyday work.
For vehicles carrying tools, equipment, electrical systems and other accessories every day, that weight saving can make a real difference.
Why Choose a Chassis Mount Canopy?
A typical tray and canopy setup is ideal when you want flexibility. You can remove the canopy and still have a usable tray for carrying larger loads.
But not every work ute needs that flexibility.
For many tradies, technicians and fleet vehicles, the canopy stays fitted permanently. If the tray is never going to be used on its own, the extra tray structure underneath the canopy may simply be additional weight that the vehicle has to carry every day.
A chassis mount service body removes that duplication by combining the storage body and vehicle mounting system into one purpose-built setup.
Less Weight, More Usable Payload
One of the biggest advantages of a chassis mount canopy is weight saving.
With a tray and canopy combination, the vehicle is carrying the weight of both the tray and the canopy. A chassis-mounted service body removes the need for the complete tray underneath, helping reduce the overall body weight.
Weight saving doesn’t mean giving up practical storage. The chassis mount canopy can still be configured with an under-tray drawer for longer tools, recovery gear or other equipment that is better stored separately from the main canopy.
Built for Tradies and Fleet Vehicles
A service body makes the most sense for vehicles where the storage body is intended to remain on the ute long term.
For tradies, it creates a dedicated work vehicle with secure enclosed storage that can be organised around tools and equipment.
For fleet operators, a chassis mount canopy can also provide a consistent body configuration across multiple vehicles while avoiding the weight of components that may never actually be used.
Depending on the application, the internal layout can be configured with shelving, drawers, partitions, electrical equipment and other storage solutions to suit the job.
Chassis Mount Canopy vs Tray and Canopy
Neither setup is automatically better. It depends on how the ute needs to be used.
A tray and canopy is the better choice if you want the option to remove the canopy and continue using the vehicle as a tray-back ute.
A chassis mount canopy or service body makes more sense when the canopy will stay fitted permanently and reducing unnecessary weight is a priority.
That makes it particularly suited to dedicated work utes, service vehicles and fleet applications where enclosed storage is required every day.
Australian Made Aluminium Service Bodies
Tong Metal chassis mount canopies are designed and manufactured in-house at our Brisbane workshop using marine-grade aluminium.
The aim is to create a strong, practical work body while keeping overall vehicle weight in mind.
With the canopy mounted directly to the chassis, the entire setup can be designed around the vehicle and the way it will actually be used, rather than simply placing another body on top of an existing tray.
Australian owned. Australian made. Built in-house in Brisbane.
If your canopy is going to stay on the ute permanently, a chassis mount canopy / service body could be a more weight-efficient alternative to a traditional tray and canopy setup.
