There are plenty of aluminium ute trays and canopies on the market. For us, the difference isn’t about adding more accessories or making the loudest claims. It comes down to how the product is designed, how it is built and whether it still makes sense after years of actual use.

Tong Metal has been manufacturing aluminium ute equipment in Brisbane for more than 20 years, from toolboxes and trays through to canopies, service bodies and complete touring setups.

Everything is designed and manufactured in-house at our Brisbane workshop, giving us control over the build from the initial design through to fabrication, welding and assembly.

We build around how the ute is actually going to be used — whether that means five days on the job, a fleet vehicle carrying equipment every day, or a setup that needs to work during the week and head away on the weekend.

Built In-House, Not Pieced Together

One of the biggest differences with Tong Metal is that the tray, canopy, toolboxes and storage system can all be considered as part of the same build.

Rather than fitting a canopy onto a tray and working around whatever space is left, we can look at the complete vehicle setup from the beginning.

Tray dimensions, canopy size, toolbox placement, storage access, drawers, water systems and other equipment can all be planned around the vehicle and what the owner actually needs to carry.

That gives us more control over how the finished setup works, not just how it looks.

Built for Work, Not Just the Photos

A ute build can look great when it leaves the workshop.

What matters more is what happens once it starts getting used.

Our aluminium ute trays and canopies are manufactured from marine-grade aluminium with practical everyday use in mind.

Doors get opened constantly. Drawers get loaded. Tools get thrown in and out. Trays carry equipment. Vehicles spend time on job sites, highways, corrugated roads and weekend tracks.

That is what the product needs to be built around.

The styling still matters, but it comes after the fundamentals: strong construction, usable storage, sensible access and a setup that suits the vehicle.

This Aluminium Tray and Canopy Build

This particular setup combines a Tong Metal aluminium ute tray with a full aluminium canopy, creating a practical platform for work.

The tray provides the foundation while the canopy creates secure enclosed storage above it. Space underneath and around the tray can then be used for toolboxes, drawers, water storage and other equipment depending on how the vehicle will be used.

For a work vehicle, that might mean keeping frequently used tools accessible while leaving larger equipment inside the canopy.

For a touring vehicle, the same space can be used for recovery gear, water, electrical equipment and camping gear that is better stored outside the main canopy area.

The idea isn’t to fit every possible accessory.

It is to make good use of the available space and build the ute around what the owner actually needs.
